Cryptocurrency Exchange in Georgia: All the Working Methods and How They Differ
Freelancers paid in USDT, apartment buyers in Tbilisi and Batumi, and people who moved with savings in stablecoins all eventually face the same task: converting digital assets into lari, dollars, or euros. There are several ways to do this, and they differ significantly in exchange rate, speed, and risks. The channel you choose also affects how your bank will view the incoming funds.
What Is Important to Know About the Rules Before Exchanging
Owning cryptocurrency, buying it, and selling it in Georgia is legal. At the same time, it is not considered a means of payment, so you cannot pay with coins for rent or in a store: first they are sold, fiat is received in your account, and only then is the transaction paid for by bank transfer.
Since 2023, the exchange of virtual assets has been regulated. Such services may be provided by companies registered with the National Bank of Georgia as virtual asset service providers (VASP), as well as banks within the scope of their licenses. The regulator regularly identifies intermediaries without registration and urges people not to use their services.
The tax situation is favorable. Income earned by an individual from the sale or exchange of cryptocurrency is not considered to be sourced from Georgia and is not subject to personal income tax. The exception is coins received as salary or as payment for goods and services, which are taxed under the general rules.
Main Exchange Methods
Licensed Exchange Office with a Physical Location
A straightforward option for those who need cash. The client completes identification using a passport, transfers the coins to the specified address, and receives the money on site, most often in US dollars. After the transaction, a receipt is issued showing the amount, exchange rate, and date. The limitations are related to office opening hours, and it is better to arrange the withdrawal of a large amount in advance.
Selling Through a VASP with Funds Credited to a Bank Account
If cash is not needed, it is more convenient to sell cryptocurrency with funds credited to a bank account. A licensed service sends lari, dollars, or euros to a card issued by any Georgian bank. Some providers also transfer funds abroad via SWIFT, SEPA, or ACH. The money comes from a registered company licensed by the National Bank of Georgia, and the client receives a document confirming the transaction. If compliance asks about the source of funds, it is enough to show the receipt. For regular withdrawals and large amounts, this is the safest option.
P2P on Exchanges
On P2P platforms, the seller receives a transfer to their card from the buyer and releases the coins from escrow. The rate can be more favorable than at exchange offices, but the money comes from strangers. When transfers from different senders regularly arrive on a card, the bank’s monitoring system may place the account under review. According to market participants, Bank of Georgia is the strictest when it comes to such transactions. The review lasts from two to six weeks, and the card is unavailable the entire time. Splitting an amount into many small transfers is considered by banks to be a separate risk indicator. In addition, if the buyer paid with money from a fraudulent scheme, the seller will have to explain the situation to the bank.
Crypto Card
For everyday spending, there is no need to withdraw the money. In January 2026, Bybit launched a Mastercard in Georgia that debits cryptocurrency when paying and works with Apple Pay and Google Pay. Bybit Georgia is registered with the National Bank as a VASP and holds a payment provider license. The card is not suitable for large payments: an apartment or a car is paid for by bank transfer.
Crypto ATMs
There are currently 83 crypto ATMs in Georgia, 73 of them in Tbilisi. Buying through them is easier than selling: some machines only accept bitcoin and litecoin for sale. Some terminals listed in databases have already been removed, and the commission is set by the operator, so it should be checked before the transaction. This option is suitable for a small amount, but not for regular withdrawals.
Private Exchange Services in Telegram
There are many ads in Georgia-related chats offering выгодный обмен without documents. An intermediary without registration does not verify the origin of the coins, and the client risks receiving funds from a fraudulent chain, while in the event of fraud it is almost impossible to recover the money. Georgian financial institutions are prohibited from working with unlicensed providers, so there will be nothing to show the bank during a review.
Comparison of Methods
| Method | Speed | Documents for the Bank | Main Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange office with a physical location | From 10 minutes | Receipt | Office hours |
| VASP with transfer to an account | Up to one hour | Receipt, transfer from the company | Verification |
| P2P on an exchange | By arrangement | Screenshots | Card blocking |
| Crypto card | Instantly | Not required | Purchases only |
| Crypto ATM | A few minutes | No | Few coins supported for selling |
| Private exchange service | Fast | No | Fraud |
Which Method to Choose for Your Task
Current expenses. Cafés and groceries are conveniently paid for with a crypto card, while a one-time cash amount is better received at the office of a licensed exchange service.
Freelancer income. Monthly payments in USDT are best withdrawn through a VASP to your own account. This creates a clear history of incoming payments from one company. Individual entrepreneurs must declare payment for services in crypto in the same way as income in lari.
Buying an apartment or a car. The coins are sold through a VASP with the funds credited to the buyer’s account. The exchange document confirms the origin of the money for the bank and the notary, after which the deal proceeds through a regular bank transfer.
Company payments. A business needs a service that works with corporate accounts and prepares invoices for accounting. P2P and private exchangers are not suitable here.
How Exchange Works in a Licensed Service
Let’s look at the process using GeCrypto as an example, a market leader and one of the most popular licensed exchange services in Georgia.
-
Verification. A passport, ID card, or Georgian residence permit is required. The check takes a few minutes and is completed only once.
-
Application. The client chooses the coin and the method of receiving funds: cash dollars at the office on Marjanishvili or a transfer in lari, dollars, euros, or dirhams. The calculator shows the final amount before the transaction.
-
Sending the coins. The cryptocurrency is transferred to the address from the application, carefully checking the network: for example, USDT exists on TRC20 and ERC20, and a network error can cost the entire amount.
-
Receiving the money. Cash is issued on site, while a transfer to a Georgian bank usually arrives within an hour.
-
Receipt. The document shows the client’s name, amount, exchange rate, and date. It is worth keeping in case the bank or notary has any questions.
